When you first install on run CuteFTP you will you be asked to
use the connection wizard as shown below:
Enter the name of your site, this is for your personal reference only and can be
what ever you want e.g. My Web Site
Enter either 126.96.36.199 (the direct address of your server) or ftp.yourdomain.com
(this only works once the nameservers have been set)
This information is also contained in the Welcome email that you received upon joining.
Enter Your loggin and password details:
Username: Get this from the 'Welcome email' you were sent on sign up
Password: Get this from the 'Welcome email' you were sent on sign up
Use the browse button to enter the path on your own hard drive were you will be
keeping the files for your web site.
If you only have one web site that you upload files for, then selecting 'Connect to this
Automatically' is something you may consider (for this tutorial we will not be selecting it).
For the less experienced uses I would not both with the 'Add to right-click integration' option
(for this tutorial we will not be selecting it).
Then select 'Finish'
CuteFTP will then attempt to log you into your site, and if all goes to plan you will
see a screen like this:
Points to notice:
1: Displays the files and folders found on your Hard Drive.
2: Displays the files and folders found on your server
3: Shows the commands being sent to your server by CuteFTP (for reference only)
4: Tracks the display of pages/files being uploaded once you start uploading your files.
You have now connected to your server account successfully and are ready to upload your first files.
Uploading Your Files:
Navigate through your local drive in your left hand window (1), until it displays the page(s)
you want to upload.
In window '2' double click on 'public_html' (this is were to upload your pages and folders too
that you want people to be able to see on your web site)
Then either RIGHT click on your chosen file and select 'Upload' or click on the upload button at the top
of the page:
Window '3' will display the commands being sent in order to upload the file, and
window '4' will display the progress of the upload.
Once the transfer has completed your file should then appear in window '2'.
Congratulations ! you have just learnt the basics up how to upload your files using CuteFTP 5.0 XP.
More sites can added using the Wizard by selecting Files > Connection Wizard
When you load CuteFTP in the future the Connection Wizard will not load, this only happens
automatically the first time the software is run. Instead the following window will load:
This lists all of your web sites and allows you to select which one you want to connect to.
You can also edit your sites, import new ones or load the Connection Wizard from this window as well.
The software obviously has a lot more to offer and I wish you all the best exploring it and making the most of it.
